Sayeh Nejatiankazemi – Iranian Political Activist and Performance Artist

Welcome to my world of artistic exploration and activism.

I am Sayeh Nejatiankazemi, an Iranian artist who has dedicated my life to pushing the boundaries of performance and theater, challenging the conventional norms and making a profound statement through my art. My journey is one of self-liberation and a relentless pursuit of political awareness.

Background and Education:

I embarked on my educational journey with a thirst for creativity and a desire to bring change through art:

  • 2004-2008: I pursued my passion at the University of Nabi Akram (USNA), earning a Bachelor’s degree in Drama Acting in Tabriz, Iran. It was during this time that I discovered the transformative power of the stage.
  • 2010-2012: I continued my academic journey at the University of Art in Tehran, where I honed my skills and attained a Master’s degree in Cinema with a specialization in directing. This period marked the fusion of my passion for cinema with my love for the performing arts.
  • 2020-2023: Seeking to broaden my horizons and delve deeper into the world of performance, I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Pedagogy at the University of Bergen (HVL) in Norway. This diverse educational background equipped me with a unique perspective on the intersection of art, education, and social change.
  • 2023-2025: My quest for artistic excellence and a deeper understanding of the transformative potential of performance led me to the University of Bergen (KMD), where I am currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) with a focus on performance. This educational journey is shaping my artistry and activism in new and exciting ways.

Artistic journey :

My artistic practice revolves around the medium of performance, and I am deeply committed to challenging the borders that separate performance from theater. I believe that performance is a potent form of political activism, offering a lens through which we can observe and challenge our relationship with politics.

In my performances, I prioritize the liberation of the body over the liberation of words. I view the body as the ultimate medium through which to convey my message and challenge societal boundaries. Unlike theater, where the body of an actor is often subservient to a narrative, performance allows me to free the body from the constraints of a predetermined script. In this unscripted, unformed space, I de-identify the body, stripping it of the political logic hidden within written words.

Performance, to me, is a direct and visceral connection between the performer and the audience through the body. It transcends the need for a structured narrative, allowing bodies and objects to become a surplus in society. By emphasizing their existential nature, I invite audiences to engage with the political implications of the performance in a more immediate and profound way.

In the realm of performance, there is no hierarchy of positions or meanings; instead, it offers a form free from any narrative, a canvas where I can challenge, provoke, and inspire without the confines of a traditional script.

My artistic journey is one of constant exploration, a relentless quest to push the boundaries of performance, challenge societal norms, and transform the political landscape through the liberation of the body. I invite you to join me on this transformative journey, where art, activism, and the human experience converge to create powerful and thought-provoking performances.

Thank you for visiting my website, and I look forward to sharing my ongoing artistic endeavors with you. Together, we can redefine the limits of what is possible through the medium of performance.
